The first place handed me a brochure and said 'take your time.' The second sat with me for 20 minutes explaining every option without any pressure.
Good providers answer questions patiently. They don't rush you or make you feel like you're on a conveyor belt.
They explain their process clearly. If they're vague about how cremation works, that's a red flag.
Transparency About Everything
Pricing should be upfront. No 'we'll figure that out later' or vague estimates.
They should explain how they ensure you get your pet's ashes back. Ask about their identification system.
A tour should be available if you want one. Places that refuse facility visits make me uncomfortable.
The Small Details
How do they transport your pet? Is it dignified?
Do they offer private viewing before cremation? Some families find this important.
What happens to the ashes between cremation and pickup? Are they stored respectfully?
Red Flags to Watch For
Pressure to upgrade services while you're grieving.
Unwillingness to provide references or reviews.
No clear process for ensuring individual cremation.
