Guide to Scattering Pet Ashes
Where, when, and how to scatter ashes—plus the regulations you should know.
I kept my dog ashes on the shelf for almost a year before I scattered them at his favorite hiking spot. The delay felt strange, but the scattering felt right.
Is scattering ashes legal?
**Private property you own:** Almost always fine.
**Public lands:** Rules vary—national parks generally allow it, state parks vary, beaches usually allowed below high tide line.
**Water:** Ocean generally allowed beyond 3 miles from shore; lakes and rivers vary.
Choosing a location
Consider meaningful places: where you walked together, a favorite park, your backyard, a beach they loved. You can divide ashes and scatter in multiple locations.
How to scatter ashes
**Basic scattering:**
**In water:** Use a biodegradable bag, pour gently onto surface, consider tossing flowers after.
**Trench scattering:** Dig a small hole, pour ashes in, cover with soil, plant flowers above.
What to expect emotionally
Scattering can be more emotional than anticipated, a profound release, or anticlimactic. All reactions are normal.
