Pet Ash Scattering Regulations
Where you can (and cannot) legally scatter your pet ashes.
I wanted to scatter my dog ashes at his favorite beach, but I was not sure if it was legal. Here is what I learned about where you can and cannot scatter pet remains.
The general rule
Pet ash scattering is much less regulated than human ash scattering. In most places, it is legal with few restrictions. However, some locations have specific rules.
Where scattering is generally allowed
**Your own property:** Almost always permitted. It is your land.
**Ocean:** Beyond 3 nautical miles from shore is generally unrestricted. Closer to shore, regulations vary by state.
**National forests:** Generally permitted. No permit usually required for small amounts.
**Private land with permission:** Legal if the landowner agrees.
Where to check regulations
**National Parks:** Each park has its own policy. Many allow scattering in designated areas or with a permit. Check with the specific park.
**State Parks:** Varies widely by state. Some allow, some prohibit, some require permits.
**Beaches:** Often allowed below the high tide line (public land). Check local rules.
**Lakes and Rivers:** Varies by location and whether it is drinking water source.
**Cemeteries:** Usually not allowed without permission or purchasing a scattering plot.
