This is definitely a no-hassle shelter. I had been looking for a dog and had inquired or looked into several other shelters and rescues, and they all wanted me to fill out long, interrogative forms for me to prove to them I was worthy of adopting a dog. Some of the questions were intrusive. It was like I was on trial (or at least a deposition). Not so with Cheyenne Animal Shelter. They were very friendly, welcoming, and cooperative. They seem like they genuinely want to give dogs new homes. If it doesn't work out either for the dog or for the adopters, they will take them back. We got there on a Friday afternoon from Spearfish, SD, thinking that a weekday would be less busy than a weekend day, but even though they had plenty of staff helping at each desk, there were still so many people coming in to look at dogs that we kept them busy hopping from one person to the next. We were able to spend plenty of time with the dog, first with the staff's observation and then alone with her. We had brought our other dog with us (as was advised), and later they were able to meet and interact with each other, too. In the end, we adopted her and were very happy with the experience. Being a shelter and with it being very hard to manage and monitor everything all the time for all the animals they have there, I think overall the shelter does a good job. The place was new and clean and spacious in the customer areas. We did not go back into the animal holding area. Our new girl smelled somewhat like urine, and I made a offhanded comment to the dog about it, maybe saying something playful to her like, "you stink, you smell like urine, you need a bath." How could she not if she had to pee while locked in her kennel and had no way to tell anyone—or even if a male dog peed on her (yes, it happens all the time) while she was relieving herself during her yard time. Anyway, when they put her away while we were signing her out, they sprayed her with perfume to mask the urine smell. To their credit, they were trying to be considerate to me, but even after bathing her when we got her home, it took a few days for her to stop sneezing from the perfume and almost two weeks for the strong perfume smell to go away. I would have rather not had her perfumed as it was so strong and really not so nice smelling anyway. Overall, this was as good an experience as could be expected, and we ended up with a wonderful—though totally untrained 18 month old shepherd mix dog. She is smart and is learning quickly—not just commands, but also house rules and good manners. Almost four weeks in and we have no regrets—and neither does she. UPDATE: We had our girl DNA tested, and the results say she is primarily 41% sled dog and 30% GSD/Rottie, so not as much "shepherd mix" as we all thought—but she's still our sweet mutt!
six months ago, I decided to walk through cas and see who I might meet. 2025 brought a divorce, struggles, life and routine changes etc for myself and two fur babies. I didn’t know “porthos” then, but life would not be as beautiful now, if not for her. Senna Marie is the queen of the castle and bosses her big siblings around. she adores both her 85 pound big sis puppy and her lazy orange tabby brother. Senna is so very odd and she brings out so much love and light in our little family. she is and will always be a most beautiful gift🤍
Great place to find your best friends. Nice clean facility, friendly staff. We stopped in to just visit the animals and ended up bringing a puppy home. Fees are fair, all up to date shots and spay or neuter included in adoption fee. We adopted a pitty mix , she had several siblings still available for adoption. She is a funny sweet puppy and so far gets along with every other dog she has met. Our puppy Cheyenne is now a year old and has a new rescue body Jasper he is 6 months old. Mew pictures.
This is a phenomenal service in our county, and it really is helping with animal rescue adoption and fertilization. I'm grateful for the service they provide us
It’s the nicest shelter I’ve been to. We got a sweet boy. He did not present well at all while kenneled but once he was out he was great. They seem to be working with the pets and really care that they get a good home. They gave us a voucher that covers an appointment to get established with a veterinarian.
