Serving since 1919, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is the largest animal shelter in eastern South Dakota that takes in abandoned, abused, homeless and unwanted animals that need tender loving care until they can find a permanent home. Our mission is to be a safe haven and human voice for all animals in need.
We first adopted our kitties at the humane society 12 years ago and recently adopted a wonderful dog there as well! I know that they always have the best interest of the animal in mind and are very diligent about making sure the animals are going with a good match. Very kind staff, you can tell they care so much about each animal as an individual. They are so incredibly busy, but the staff is fast and efficient. I'll always adopt from them, and I am so appreciative of their service!
I adopted a single female guinea pig from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society a few weeks ago and it was a smooth and pleasant experience. We filled out the adoption form before we arrived and this expedited the process. The staff kept thorough notes on Rocket, the piggy I chose to take home, and they answered my questions about her history to the best of their ability. Everything they told me has helped me to settle her in to her new routine in my home with as little stress on her as possible. They also followed up via email a few weeks later to check on her progress, which I appreciate. I also took her to see my regular vet a week after bringing her home, where she was awarded a clean bill of health. It was clear that the staff had a lot of affection for her (which isn’t surprising as she is a perfect angel), and they were glad to see her go to a loving home.
We had a great experience adopting our new dog. Staff was great, they helped us with introduce our dog to our new dog safely and make sure they were a good fit. We really appreciated that. It’s been over a week and we couldn’t be happier about our new addition to our family.

They truly care about both the animals and the families adopting them. We felt well-informed, supported, and confident bringing Ben home, and he has been an amazing addition to our family. It’s clear that the Humane Society puts a lot of heart into what they do. We’re so grateful for the care they provided and for helping us find the perfect new family member. The place was very clean. However you had to fill out an application first before looking at any of the animals. They had few cats. Not all of the cages were full. Which was good!
