Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, provides shelter for homeless or abused animals, and programs to help pets in our community.
If I could give a zero, I would for the experience I had at this organization for the first time. I’m writing this review to share an extremely disappointing and heartbreaking experience my family had due to the poor communication and lack of follow-up from both the staff and leadership at Lollypop Farm. My family had been caring for two young stray cats who were bonded sisters. One of them developed a serious eye injury, and because we wanted her to get immediate medical care we couldn’t afford at that moment, we brought her to Lollypop Farm. At intake, we very clearly told staff that we intended to adopt her once she received treatment so she could remain with her sister. We were told directions of calling them back to get updates and that’s what we did. We called, left voicemails, and waited for updates like we were instructed to do. Not one phone call was returned. Days went by with no information at all. Out of concern, we eventually drove there in person, only to find out, without any prior communication that she had already been put up for adoption and placed in another home. The admissions manager showed really no remorse in what they did “yea sorry, she was put up for adoption but we will talk to our employees to better communicate/document on intake”… the only employees who really showed compassion to us were these two young females at the front desk of the adoption center. So I appreciate that from them. What made this worse was the ongoing communication issues afterward. We reached out to staff and even the president for clarification and help. It took days to get responses and sometimes none, and the replies we did receive were inconsistent, unhelpful, no sense of urgency and dismissive of the concerns we raised. For an organization that handles animals and families in emotional situations, the lack of accountability and basic communication was incredibly hurtful. We completely understand that shelters have procedures, but transparency and follow-up should be the minimum standard. We were left heartbroken, confused, and wishing someone had simply returned one of our many calls before making such a permanent decision about an animal we were actively caring for. Especially when the two cats were bonded sisters and were always together:( I was also told by the admissions manager that she would call the adoptive family to see how that family was doing with the cat and then let me know if she’s okay. I never received any phone call from her and now supposedly the president told me they can’t do that because it will cause the family distress.. like excuse me? What about the distress you have caused me, my family, and her sister wondering why her sister isn’t around. They made a Facebook post as well about her on spotters and I didn’t know about this until someone commented on the post, stating that they knew the owner and they tagged my name in the comments! I never got reached out to by lollypop about it. You would think someone in charge of that media is keeping an eye on what people comment to make sure pets reunite with their family. I hope this review encourages Lollypop Farm to seriously improve communication between staff, leadership, and the community. No family should feel ignored or blindsided the way we did. Nothing will ever fix what they did and I will never come back here to get help. My sweet girl, we miss you so much and love you and hope you are getting all the love you deserve😭❤️
Adopted Woofy, my 8 year old Pomeranian mix in September through seniors for seniors. He’s a great companion! Lollipop made sure he was healthy before the adoption was final. He has settled in well!
I adopted my sweet baby 6 years ago from Lollypop & she is simply my sassy little cuddle bug. I had at the same time, adopted my other sweet girl from a home who simply had taken her mother off the street to allow her to birth her litter. These were two vastly different experiences. My furbaby from Lollypop came with having all of her shots, spayed and a clean bill of health, for around $125? (Can’t recall) my other little girl… it was all out of pocket.. I won’t say where I went to have her spayed but, it was sticker shock at $480. The shots? I don’t recall. I won’t ever do that again. Luckily, she has had no health issues, which in cases like that, are a gamble. Lollypop was the way to go, the intake coordinator at the did her due diligence and we were in and out in a reasonable amount of time. All in all, it was a great experience at Lollypop and I would absolutely recommend. Happy Holidays from Elle! (Tiger from Lollypop) and Evie!
Saw 4 puppies posted on the website. Drove over and waited in line for my turn to meet our new member of the family. Welcome Brandy (formerly Cora) The staff was very friendly and helpful
Adopted a bonded pair of cats here two years ago and realized I never reviewed. Two important points: 1. As a bonded pair my girls were two for the price of one. Consider adopting a bonded pair, cats like to have friends! 2. Lollypop was super clear to me regarding their personalities. My girls were spirit cats, which means they are extremely shy and difficult to handle upon adoption, and spirit cats may never be social. Again, Lollypop made sure I was aware of this- you will be well informed as to your pet's temperament. For me, my girls did open up over time (very slowly- it took several months for the more afraid one to come out of hiding when I was around, and now she's very cuddly, though she still won't come out for strangers). I was willing to take the risk that they wouldn't, though- if you're not willing to have a flighty spirit cat, don't adopt a flighty spirit cat! Oh, additional point I just remembered- Lollypop really wants to support new adopters. They literally gave vouchers for my girls first wellness visits the local vets take.
