BARCS is a nonprofit organization operating the largest animals shelter and pet adoption center in Maryland. We are the open admission shelter for Baltimore City, meaning no animal or family in need is turned away.
Visited this facility hoping to adopt a dog I saw online. I was hopeful, as I know the process of searching for dogs (small dogs especially) can be stressful. I saw the dog on BARCS website the night prior to my visit, realizing I was off the following day, I decided to take a trip. My plan to arrive early was success, as I arrived 10 minutes before opening. At 2pm, I walk in with several others. I was greeted, and asked if there was a particular dog that I was interested in. I named the dog (Tony Stark) and was immediately told he was no longer available due to being placed in a home—again, the dog arrived to the facility on 8/10, the day before. I decided to cut my loss and look around. They had several dogs, few had ‘I’m adopted’ signs, others had behavior signs, others said ‘I’m available’. I took note of the dogs I was interested in and gave the names to the front desk. I gave the names of 2 other dogs and was told they had been ‘placed’ as well. This information caught me completely off guard. Why are dogs w/ signs that say ‘available’ posted on the website, and for the public view if they’ve been placed? The dog I came to visit was there, the sign said: not available until 8/14. When I asked the front desk they said he’s not available at all. He’s been placed. I understand competition is great, especially with smaller breeds, however, the front desk staff shared that they cannot give details on how the placement of these animals occurred. I usually don’t write reviews but this place is misleading, and can crush your hopes of adoption. I believe they want ‘certain people’ to have these animals, and let’s just say they don’t look like me.
I love it here everyone was super nice, down to earth and wonderful with the animals. Thanks for ur help I love "now" who is now changed to baby tiger 🐯🐅 he is so cute 🥰 so good n such a blessing !!! He was adopted from here .. we love our baby boy 💕
The facility is clean and all the employees are friendly and easy to work with. I have volunteered for Dogs Day Out and fostered a cat. Both experiences went well. The parking lot isn’t very big and sometimes it can get very busy.
Very Nice animal rescue. very clean, a large range of animals to choose from, great customer service from each team member i came in contact with. The adoption process was well put & i got good information on all areas for my new kitten. Thank you all so much for a great experience! It’s day 2 & he loves his new home💙!
Adopted my gentle giant, Wattle, a great dane from here. The people were very helpful and kind, and seem to really care about the animals. Wattle was very underweight and scared in the shelter, but has truly blossomed since coming home. He is the sweetest most cuddly boy ever!! And he gets along perfectly with our other dog who is quite a bit smaller. Highly recommend this shelter, and I will forever be thankful for the sweet doggo we have found.
